HEADMASTER

Clifton, the independent boys’ school in Durban, is situated in the beautiful suburb of Morningside. We are proud to offer a world-class, holistic education for boys from Grade R through to Grade 12, catering specifically to the development of boys into responsible, confident and competent young men.

A boys’ school by conviction, Clifton provides an educational environment that is designed to facilitate learning and assist in developing young men of character, who share an uncompromising belief in the power of family values, who thrive on competition, delight in discovery, exercise compassion and are courageous in their choices.

We walk this journey of progress and development with our young men and, as you will see from these pages, there are numerous activities and opportunities from which our boys can choose and grow. At the same time, we are conscious of our motto, “ prodesse quam conspici” – to accomplish, rather than to be conspicuous. As such, our boys remain humble and well mannered.

I invite you to take some time exploring our website. Better still, I would invite you to visit us at our campus in Morningside, where you will be warmly received. I hope too that you will experience the sense of enjoyment that our boys and staff feel from being part of this wonderful school.

‘Begin with the End in Mind’ is habit no. 2 of Stephen Covey’s International best-selling book, ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’. This poses a serious paradox with regards to our current situation. How can we possibly navigate our way to success, if we can’t currently see the end of Covid-19? There is however some respite if we apply some of the principles in Covey’s book.

FILM ACADEMY COVID CHALLENGE
The students in the Film Academy were all invited to produce their own short horror films during the COVID 19 lockdown. Much like the annual Clifton Film Festival – the “Ogres” – we recognize all of the effort and skill that goes into making short films.

Dear Members of the Clifton Community,
As a country and community, as well as a school community, we have faced various unique challenges as we confront the implications of the coronavirus pandemic and the national lockdown. We have had to deal with the very real and practical challenges of closing the school in March, getting the online system up and running effectively, as well as coping with the practical and emotional issues around the lockdown in the community and home environment.
