The School of Music
The Arts and Music at Clifton are an integral part of our curriculum.
The Clifton School of Music is run by a dedicated team of experienced musicians with a real passion for music and teaching boys.
FOUNDATION PHASE MUSIC TEACHER AND MUSIC ADMINISTRATOR
Nina Alborough is a versatile musician, specialising in the oboe, singing and piano. She grew up in Croatia and Germany before moving the sunny shores of Durban, South Africa.
Nina taught music at the Deutsche Schule Durban, and at Hillcrest Primary prior to joining Clifton as Foundation Phase Music teacher, and Music Administrator, at the beginning of 2021.
She is a member of the Durban City Orchestra, performing with them not only as a member of the woodwind section but also as a soloist accompanied by the orchestra on both oboe and as a solo singer. She has also worked as an ad-hoc player in the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra.
Nina is passionate about making music fun and is a proud mom to her young son Benjamin.
HEAD OF CLIFTON INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC AND OF PREPARATORY SCHOOL SUBJECT MUSIC
Jane Magner has grown up in the Durban music scene and has made a name for herself through her passion, expertise and versatility as a performer and teacher across different musical genres and disciplines.
Jane holds a Masters degree in Music from UKZN and played full-time for almost 10 years as a professional violinist in the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, before taking up the post of Senior Preparatory Music Specialist at Clifton in 2018.
She has also performed as an electric violinist on the Barnyard Theatre circuit, as well as performing as part of the live string section on stage with artists such as Michael Buble on their respective South African tours.
Jane has been a strings tutor for the KZN Youth Orchestra for the past 7 years. She is currently most known to the public as half of the dynamic South African electronic music group, Veranda Panda.
Jane is loving the journey of building and nurturing Music as part of the Arts Department at Clifton, and is passionate about sharing her love for music and performance with the boys. She aims to bring out the best musician in each child, providing them with an outlet to enjoy, add value and find meaning in themselves and the world around them through the art of music.
HEAD OF CHORAL MUSIC
From the age of 4, Nina was trying to work out songs on the piano and so her musical journey began. She attended piano and cello lessons before even learning to read, and joined the Betty Pack Youth String Orchestra at the age of 6. Later she joined the Transvaal Chamber Orchestra while enjoying various sporting activities at High School – especially netball. Nina played club netball after school and after working at a bank for a year, studied music at Wits University.
For 23 years thereafter, Nina was a tutti cellist in the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, accompanying musicians on the piano and playing in a quartet – travelling to India, Switzerland and France to perform in honor of Freedom Day and Mandela Day. Nina says, “The most memorable moment in my musical profession was performing at Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday in Qunu.”
Nina was Head of Music at Crawford College North Coast for 9 years, while juggling time with her two sons, their sports and music. She has looked forward to joining – or rather rejoining – the Clifton Music Department. In the early 90s, Nina taught piano lessons and early morning theory at Clifton, passing on all piano students to Tania Rousine.
Nina is excited to be working with other experienced and active professional musicians in the department.
