Catch up with Jack Spence (Class of 2021), a 2019 SA Triathlon Champs gold medalist and proud Old Boy!
Now racing with the Wingate University Triathlon Team, Jack shares his journey from Clifton to the international stage.
During his summer break, he popped by campus to reconnect with familiar faces. Read all about his inspiring story in our latest ‘From Our Old Boys’ Network’.
How did you end up where you are now?
It all started years ago when my passion for triathlon began to grow. I soon realized the sport demanded a lot of time and focus to reach the level I aspired to – competing internationally against athletes from around the world, with the dream of one day representing South Africa at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
I also wanted to pursue a degree while following my passion, which led me to study in the United States. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities and experiences that Clifton gave me and for everything I am experiencing now while studying abroad.
What are some of the good/fond memories you forged during your time while still a schoolboy at Clifton?
Some of my best memories at Clifton are from the Clifton Challenge, racing my friends in a fun, lively atmosphere. Everyone was always so supportive – from my friends cheering me on to my teachers encouraging me every step of the way. I honestly don’t think any other school would back its boys like Clifton does, no matter the path they choose.
What did you take away with you from Clifton: lessons, skills, friendships etc?
What really stuck with me was learning how to be a gentleman in the wider world – that presenting yourself with pride and confidence can take you a long way. For me, it’s all about taking pride in what you do while also lifting up those around you.
What advice would you share with yourself as a schoolboy knowing what you know now?
Try not to get too wrapped up in what’s ahead or hoping for something better tomorrow. Focus on where you are right now and stay grateful for the opportunities already around you.
What is your message to other Clifton Boys to inspire them to contribute or get involved in an Old Boys' Association?
Heading back to Clifton was such a good call from my friend and classmate Mickele. Being on campus again really showed me how far I’ve come and reminded me what a privilege it was to be part of Clifton.
Any Last Thought?
Studying abroad has been one of the best experiences of my life. If you’re excelling in academics or sports, the opportunity is definitely there. I’d recommend looking into it or chatting with someone who’s been there — it’s an amazing experience that can open so many doors.
